Dr. Alberto Don Olivera, dentist.

Dr. Alberto Don Olivera graduated from the University of Guadalajara in 1978. His father urged him to pursue a law degree, but Alberto turned to a psychologist to evaluate what field of study would suit him best. Due to his fine motor skills and aptitude for medical concepts, the psychologist recommended dentistry.  Here are a list of his impressive credentials:

  •       Graduate of University of Guadalajara  1976.
  •       Graduate of Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics) 1984.
  •       Graduate on Oral rehabilitation and Cosmetic Dentistry 2002.
  •       Graduate of University Cuauhtérmoc In Oral Implants 2006
  •       Founder Member of  Jaliciense  Academic  Oral implantology.
  •       Founder Member and Actual President of Colegio Odontológico dela Riberade Chapala del estado de Jalisco.
  •       Over 33 Years Experience in General Dentistry.
  •       Over 20 Years Experience in Rivera de Chapala Community.
  •       Procedures Performed in office.
  •       Root Canal Therapy.
  •       Cosmetics Restorations with Biologic Compatible Materials.
  •       Fix bridges, Partials and Dentures.
  •       Implants.
  •       Effective Whitening System.
  •       Painless Treatment (office sedation available).
  •       Special Plan for Short-Term Patients.

For 10 years, Dr. Don offered his services in Guadalajara and then he started coming to the Chapala area once a week.  That was 20 years ago. The increased need for his services at Lakeside continued to build.  When it reached five days per week, he relocated his practice.  Dr. Don prefers working in a medical environment where the total patient can be treated.

During a recent interview Dr. Don explained more about his practice.  “I like to confer with medical doctor’s onsite if patients have physical problems that could complicate dental procedures. Access to medical monitoring equipment when a patient requires sedation is also important,” Dr. Don explained. “It makes both the patient and me feel more secure, particularly since 95% of my clients are foreigners.”

“I love working with the expatriates. They understand the need for regular dental care, they are familiar with modern techniques and they express appreciation when I correct their functional or cosmetic dental problems.” Dr. Don continued, “Sometimes I treat their gardeners or maids. Since these are my own people, I do the work at a reduced fee, even if the foreign employer pays for the services. It makes me feel good to do that for them.”

Vacationers who combine relaxation with dental work increase every season. Dr. Don prefers at least two weeks to complete the work, especially if it involves bridges, implants or crowns, but he has managed a few emergency transformations. “I recently extracted a man’s teeth, took the impression, inserted the temporaries and had him on his way to a Puerta Vallarta vacation the next day. He returned the following week for his permanent set of new teeth before returning home,” he said.

For many, “painless dentistry” sounds like an oxymoron. When I asked him about this claim he said, “When I was 18, I experienced incredible pain from a procedure on my own teeth. I am the world’s worse coward. Improving a patient’s attitude toward dentistry through reduced pain became my personal and professional mission.”

Dr. Don and his staff provide a wide variety of dental services to this community. Two highly skilled technicians—Gloria, on board for 13 years, and Alicia, for 12 years and his English speaking receptionist, Maya, for 3 years—make the clinic hum with efficiency.

I questioned the pros and cons of working with expatriates who comprise the majority of his clientele. “I love working with them. They understand the need for regular dental care, they are familiar with modern techniques and they express appreciation when I correct their functional or cosmetic dental problems.” Dr. Don continued, “Sometimes I treat their gardeners or maids. In response to the fundraising efforts of the Lake Chapala Shrine Club, Dr. Don’s charitable side shines. He is donating 100% of all teeth cleaning services at $250 pesos each during October 2008 toward the funds necessary to treat or transport ill Lakeside children to the Guadalajara Shriner’s Hospital inMexico City. He hopes to raise $20,000 pesos for the fund. “The foreign community gives so much to local charities to help our poor. As a Mexican citizen, I also want to make my contribution,” said Dr, Don.
